Lightening, surfing, leather jackets and hair metal. Did Milton Bradley go Inception on me as a child to create an ad that spoke directly to me?

Much to my dismay, my research prior to writing today’s post yielded little behind-the-scenes info on the spot, which debuted sometime in the early-to-mid 90s. But once you watch the commercial, I think you’ll realize that context, backstory and realism are all completely irrelevant when it comes to advertising to kids.

The ad went on to achieve legendary status among children of the 90s, as evidenced by its numerous parodies. And while you may scoff at its absurdity, the catchy song featured in the ad is anything but a farce.

My affinity for jingles has been well documented on The Duncan Daily (Na-na-na-na-NAPA know how), and the Crossfire anthem, with its wailing guitar riffs and screaming lyrics, is no exception. In fact, the Motley Crüe-inspired tune is likely the only reason the Crossfire commercial holds such a prominent position in 90s pop culture lore.

While the singer in the ad clearly cautions  “you’ll get caught up in the Crossfiiiiiire,” it’s obvious I was too proud to heed this warning – because it’s been 20 years and I’m still caught up in it.
