Baseball and pizza. Show a 4-year-old me those two things and you’ve instantly got my attention. Now, the Peter, Paul and Mary didn’t really do much for me back then, but hey, it worked for this Pizza Hut spot.

Anyone who was a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles growing up probably recognizes this commercial – it was actually an ad that that played before the movie on the VHS copy of the 1990 classic.

Pizza Hut and the Turtles were a marketing marriage made in heaven, as Michelangelo and crew feasted on ‘za regularly (although in the movie, “those turtle boys” are actually Domino’s patrons). With an ad that rolled directly before the film (yes, film not movie), Pizza Hut was all but guaranteed to make an impression on young, hungry Ninja Turtles fans like myself.

Personally, I think the ad was incredibly effective, as evidenced by the Pizza Hut and Pepsi frenzy it drove me to as a child. But alas, a 25-cent lemonade stand couldn’t support my fine dining habits, and I found Pizza Bagels and Ecto Cooler to be more than adequate replacements.
